About Us
Purpose
The Mount Horem Baptist Church is organized primarily for religious, charitable, and educational purposes and has a five-fold function:
Evangelism, Discipleship, Fellowship, Ministry, and Worship. Winning the lost to Christ and developing the saved is our first priority. God is always first, Christ is the only star, and the Holy Spirit is the only guide.
This Church shall observe The Lord’s Supper and Baptism as its only two Ordinances.
We encourage the study of the Scriptures while using the King James Version of the Holy Bible in Preaching and Teaching.

Mt. Horem Baptist Church History
The Mount Horem Baptist Church History
The Mount Horem Baptist Church, formerly Mims Addition Baptist Church, was organized in 1926 in a building that was to be purchased later. The lot was donated by Mr. Collins, the real estate man of Mims Addition. The location of this building at Chew and Perkins Streets housed the very small membership of the Mims Addition Baptist Church. Reverend Lampley served as the first shepherd of this small membership and continued to serve in this capacity until 1928, at which time Reverend Body succeeded him. The church continued to progress slowly until 1930. Reverend R. M. Mitchell succeeded Reverend Body.
The adverse circumstances of the church caused its doors to be closed during the administration of Reverend Mitchell. Despite this retardation, the members were determined, and so the church was reopened under the administration of Reverend Gideon, who served a short period of two months, followed by Reverend W.M. Blanton, who served one month. Among those faithful members who labored untiringly for the building of this church in the community were Messrs. Jesse Olds, Ike Griffin, Daniel Green, Mr. Paige, and Frank Freeman.
Although the number was few, each member played his part well. During this period, Reverend Mitchell was recalled to the pastorate and served until 1935. During his reign, the church’s name was changed from Mims Addition Baptist Church to Mount Horem Baptist Church.
In 1935, the Reverend A. Livington George was called by a membership of twenty-two. Under the leadership of Reverend George, elected unanimously, the membership became revitalized, and it began to grow immediately. Among those Christian workers who pioneered in holding the church together and elected Reverend George their leader were Reverend and Mrs. Marion Lumex, Messrs. And Mesdames J. Olds, Birdie Gibbs ( an honorary member at the time), Hattie Miller, Toliver, Simon, D. James, Kiblers, Odis Jones, Reverend Fordice, Carrie Griffin, Mary Jones, Laura Teale-Bogans, Mary Baltrip, Cecil Miller and Randle.
This group of militant workers persevered with the newly elected pastor in building Mount Horem.
In 1937, the church underwent a greater misfortune. Its building was destroyed by fire. With only eighty dollars in the building fund, they paid five dollars down on a lot at the present location, 1911 Lockwood Drive. The remainder of the lumber for the church was purchased for fifty dollars. The remaining twenty-five dollars were spent on blocks and sills. Much of the lumber salvaged from the original structure was used. In the struggle to erect the building at its present location, the earnest and faithful members, men and women, assisted in building the Mount Horem Baptist Church.
In the meantime, the church held services at Rev. Van Wilson’s church. Money was coming in too slowly to purchase the lumber needed to erect the building, so the pastor, Rev. A. L. George, borrowed money from Epstein Loan Company and the Puriatan Association on himself. He also gave the church all the money from his first anniversary and pastored without salary for a year. The building was finally completed, and the membership began to grow.
While the struggle for survival grew less, each auxiliary took on new life. The Sunday School flourished under Superintendents Jesse Olds, Mr. Paige, and G. A. Preston. With each succeeding year, greater accomplishments were achieved. Mrs. Birdie Gibbs worked untiringly with the Women’s Missionary Society, and much good work was done for the church and community. She was succeeded by Roberta Thompson, who was an inspiration to all of the women. She served faithfully until 1946. The Women’s Missionary Society continued to make its contributions.
After a few more years of progress, increased devotion, spiritual fervor, and determined minds, the church needed more property. In 1945, the church purchased two lots in the rear of the church, another lot each two consecutive years later, two more lots were purchased, and in 1947, another lot was purchased, giving the church a total of five lots. During this same year, a steel fence was purchased and built around three of the lots to serve as a playground for the children. The playground was opened with impressive ceremonies. Miss Ellie Alma Wells delivered the opening address.
As the church continued to progress under the blessings of Almighty God, its program was expanded. In 1947, the building fund treasury increased to $10,000.00. An educational building was erected adjoining the church to carry out the educational program. Rev. A. L. George’s administration was crowned with success in that through God, and the cooperation of the members, Mount Horem overcame the many obstacles that seemed to hover over it for many years. In Reverend George, a man of high ideals was found who stood for the Christian principles set by Jesus Christ, was a humble servant, and was a deep thinker. Following Christ’s footsteps, he went about daily, doing good for those he met. Some of the members who pioneered in helping Reverend A. L. George to carry out his program were Messrs. A.L. Steele, James Young, Willie Scott, Conroe Woolridge, C.L. Steele, Morris Fuller, Lee Fuller Sr., Gustavia Eatmon, Pearl Poindexter, Lucy Tinsley Bonds, Laura Bogans, Allene Steele, Lizzie Rablis, Willie B. George, Fannie Leatha Willis. Reverend George’s ministry and journey here ended on October 13, 1950, when the Master called him home for his reward.
During the interim between Reverend George’s death and the calling of another minister, the members continued to pray to the Lord to send them a new leader. Their prayers were answered, and Thomas F. Freeman was called to fill the vacancy and assume official duties in March 1951.
Under Dr. T. F. Freeman’s leadership, many new programs were implemented. The crowning achievement was the groundbreaking building of a new sanctuary and educational building that was placed in service in August 1957, and the church was blessed to pay off ahead of schedule. Dr. Freeman touched many lives in his 69 years of service to the membership of Mt. Horem and the community at large. Dr. T. F. Freeman was called from labor to reward on June 6th, 2020, and was laid to rest on June 17th, 2020.
A more comprehensive update on the tenure of Dr. Freeman and those who labored with him is coming soon.
On July 12th, 2020, the congregation elected Rev. Larry Williams to serve as Interim Pastor of Mt. Horem Baptist Church. Rev. Williams tenure ended on April 23rd, 2023.
On April 30th, 2023, history was made in the life of Mt. Horem when the first female Interim Pastor, Dr. Cicely Bailey, agreed to serve and was unanimously elected by the congregation. Dr. Bailey has been faithful in her leadership and continues to serve to present.
Mt. Horem Baptist Church Articles of Faith
Articles of Faith
- Scriptures
We believe that the Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired, and is a perfect treasure of divine instruction; that it has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth without any mixture of error for its matter; that it reveals the principles by which God will judge us, and therefore ism and shall remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and opinions shall be tried.
- God
There is one and only one living and true God. He is an intelligent, spiritual, and personal Being, the Creator, Redeemer, Preserver, and Ruler of the universe. God is infinite in holiness and all other perfections. God is all powerful and all knowing; and His perfect knowledge extends to all things past, present, and future, including the future decisions of His free creatures. To him we owe the highest love, reverence and obedience. The eternal triune God reveals Himself to us as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, with distinct personal attributes but without division of nature essence or being.
- The Fall of Man (Genesis 1:26-30; 2:5, 7, 18-22; 3)
We believe man is the special creation of God, made in His own image. He created them male and female as the crowning work of His creation. The gift of gender is thus part of the goodness of God’s creation. In the beginning, man was innocent of sin and was endowed by his Creator with freedom of choice. By his free choice, man sinned against God and brought sin into the human race. Through the temptation of Satan, man transgressed the command of God and fell from his original innocence whereby his posterity inherited a nature and an environment inclined toward sin. Therefore, as soon as they are capable of moral action, they become transgressors and are under condemnation.
- The Way of Salvation (Matt. 12:31-37, John 1:12, EPH. 1:7,2:8-10; 1Pet. 1:18-19; 1 John 1:9)
We believe that salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed on Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins. We believe that all sins, except blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, are forgivable.
- Justification
We believe the Scriptures teach that the great Gospel blessing which Crist secure to such as believe in Him is justification; that justification includes the pardon of sin, and the promise of eternal life on principles of righteousness; that is bestowed, not in consideration of any works of righteousness which we have done, but solely through faith in the Redeemer’s blood; by virtue of which faith his perfect righteousness is freely imputed to us of God; that it brings us into a state of mst blessed peace and favor with God, and secures every other blessing needful for time and eternity.
- The Freeness of Salvation
We believe that the Scriptures teach that the blessings of salvation are made free to all by the Gospel, that it is the immediate duty of all to accept them by cordial, penitent and obedient faith; and that nothing prevents the salvation of the greatest sinner on earth, but his own determined depravity and voluntary rejection of the Gospel; which rejection involves Him an aggravated condemnation.
- Regeneration
We believe that the Scriptures teach that in order to be saved, sinners must be regenerated, or born again; that regeneration consists in giving a holy disposition to the mind that it is effected in a manner above our voluntary obedience to the Gospel; and that its proper evidence appears in the holy fruits of repentance and faith, and newness of lift.
- Repentance and Faith
We believe the Scriptures teach that repentance and faith are sacred duties, and also inseparable graces, wrought in our souls by the regenerating Spirit of God; whereby being deeply convinced of our guilt, danger and helplessness and of the way of salvation by Christ, we turn to God with unfeigned contrition, confession and supplication for mercy; at the same time heartily receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as our prophet, priest and king, and relying on Him alone as the only and all sufficient Savior.
- God’s Purpose of Grace
We believe that Scriptures teach that election is the eternal purpose of God, according to which He graciously regenerates, sanctifies and saves sinners, that according to which He graciously regenerates, sanctifies and saves sinners, that being perfectly consistent with the free agency of man, it comprehends all the means in connection with the end; that it is a most glorious display of God’s sovereign goodness being infinitely free, wise, holy nd unchangeable; that it utterly excludes boasting and promotes humility, love prayer, praise, trust in God, and active imitation excludes boasting and promotes humility, love prayer, praise, trust in God and active imitation of His free mercy; that it encourages the use of means in the highest degree; that it may be ascertained by its effects in all who truly believe the Gospel; that it is the foundation of Christian assurance; and that to ascertain it with regard to ourselves demands and deserves the utmost diligence.
- Sanctification
We believe the Scriptures teach that Sanctification is the process by which, according to the will of God, we are made partakers of his holiness; that it is a progressive work; that it is begun in regeneration; and that it is carried on in the hearts of believers by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, the Sealer and Comforter, in the continual use of the appointed means especially the Word of God, self-examination, self-denial, watchfulness, and prayer.
- Perseverance of Saints
We believe the Scriptures teach that such only are real believers as endure to the end; that their persevering attachment to Christ is the grand mark which distinguishes them from superficial professors; that a special Providence watches over their welfare; and they are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation.
- The Law and Gospel
We believe the Scriptures teach that the Law of God is the eternal and unchangeable rule of his moral government; that it is holy, just and good; and that the inability which the Scriptures ascribe to fallen men to fulfill its precepts, arise entirely from their love of sin; to deliver them from which, and to restore them through a Mediator to unfeigned obedience to the holy Law, is one great end of the Gospel, and the Means of Grace connected with the establishment of the visible church.
- A Gospel Church
We believe the Scriptures teach that a visible church of Christ is a congregation of baptized believers, associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the Gospel; observing the ordinances of Christ; governed by His laws; and exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by His Word; that its only scriptural officers are Bishops or Pastors, and Deacons whose qualifications, claims and duties are defined in the Epistles to Timothy and Titus.
- Baptism and The Lord’s Supper
We believe the Scriptures teach that Christian baptism is the immersion in water of a believer, into the name of the Father, and Son and Holy Spirit; to show forth in a solemn and beautiful emblem, our faith in the crucified, buried, and risen Savior, with its effect in our death to sin and resurrection to a new life; that it is a prerequisite to the privileges of a church relation; and to the Lord’s Supper, in which the members of the church by the sacred use of bread and wine, are to commemorate together, the dying love of Christ, preceded always by solemn self-examination.
- The Lord’s Day (Exodus 20:8-11; Matthew 12:1-12)
We believe the first day of the week is the Lord’s Day. It is a Christian Institution for regular observance. It commemorates the resurrection of Christ from the dead and should include exercises of worship and spiritual devotion, both public and private. Activities on the Lord’s Day should commensurate with the Christian’s conscience under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
- Civil Government (Matthew 22:15-22; Acts 5:29; Romans 13:1-7)
We believe that God has ordained and created all authority consisting of three basic institutions: 1) the home, 2) the church, and 3) the state. Every person is subject to these authorities but all (including the authorities themselves) all answerable to God and governed by His Word. God has given each institution specific Biblical responsibilities and balanced those responsibilities with the understanding that no institution has the right to infringe upon the other. The home, the church and the state are equal and sovereign in their respective Biblically assigned spheres of responsibility under God. We believe that we must obey God rather than the state.
- Righteous and Wicked
We believe the Scriptures teach that there is a radical and essential difference between the righteous and the wicked; that such only as through faith are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and sanctified by the Spirit of our God, are truly righteous in his esteem; while all such as continue in impenitence and unbelief are in His sight wicked,m and under the curse; and this distinction holds among men both in and after death.
